End of Flagpoling

As of December 23 at 11:59 pm ET, Canada will no longer provide work and study permits to individuals attempting to flagpole at a port of entry. Flagpoling—leaving Canada to briefly visit the U.S. or St. Pierre and Miquelon and then re-entering to access immigration services—has been draining resources and causing delays at the border.

To apply or renew work and study permits, individuals must now go through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), not the border. Exemptions may apply in certain cases. This change helps both Canada and the U.S. streamline border operations and uphold security.
